Studio Z - the first surrealist expedition to Mars
Hi all,
I am so excited, because we have just finished three days in the studio - recording a handful of the basic tracks of what is intended to become the first surrealist expedition to Mars (on CD)..! I am writing a lot of new music at the moment, partly inspired by Frank Zappa and his wonderful use of percussion... Bass player Ole Morten Vaagan and drummer Hakon Mjaset Johansen (who arrived in the studio directly from gigs with Chick Corea in Tokyo) and myself are really enjoying playing together, so we have a great time in the studio, but the music is quite hard! I am learning a lot of new things about drumming and percussion, and want to dive as deep into this as possible. Several great players will join us later for solos and additional recordings - among the possible candidates are four of my personal all time favourites; keyboard genius Tommy Mars (he is pure magic!), bass player Arthur Barrow, percussionist Ed Mann and vocal/drummer Jimmy Carl Black... I keep my fingers crossed! And I am wondering why Frank Zappa's compositorical methodes are not reflected more in the work of present day composers? Is it pure conservatism in the academia? Good old ahead of his time? Did Frank step on too may toes, so - like with Django Reinhardt - the renaissance of his music will not begin until he has rested 25 years in his grave? Or what???
Best wishes - Jon Larsen
